It was founded in 1401 and over the years began to also be the host of a library as well as an art school, two things O’Hara loved and would have given any excuse to go visit.

St. Sebastianwas a Christian saint and martyr. Famous for having been martyred twice, first by arrows, second my clubbing. He died in 288 ad. It is not hard to be a better, happier St. Sebastian. He is also known for being a homosexual icon. It is with this line that I must inform you that our author, Frank O’Hara, was a homosexual. He even wrote a poem titled “Homosexuality.” This poem was probably meant for someone he was in love with, and obviously that someone was a man.

Here it seems that there is some meaning behind the color orange. It is a rather unusual color to just happen to mention more than once. Orange tulips mean energy, passion, and desire, just like the color orange does. A birch tree is a symbol for renewal. The Gauls, a people that lived in much of what is now France would light the branches on fire as a sign of good luck for a long, happy marriage. Yogurt is a custard-like food, sweet and often has fruit or nuts or candy mixed in. So, perhaps O’Hara is saying that he wants to marry this person. But the secrecy that they must take when around other people or simply alone, implies that it is a forbidden union.

as solemn as unpleasantly definitive as statuary when right in front of it
in the warm New York 4 o’clock light we are drifting back and forth
between each other like a tree breathing through its spectacles
O’Hara does not like the statuaries. He doesn’t like their solemness or how defined they are. He seems to want the ambiguous. He wants hope and the possibility that their relationship isn’t forbidden. “Like a tree breathing through its spectacles” was baffling at first. A tree doesn’t have spectacles. But it does breathe. However, like most of the poem, O’Hara is speaking metaphorically. Spectacles, you look through. Perhaps he means, himself and his partner. They look at each other with their eyes and breathe. They breathe each other in. Like their life force comes from the other person. They breathe in each other’s souls through their eyes.
and the portrait show seems to have no faces in it at all, just paint
you suddenly wonder why in the world anyone ever did them
This part isn’t too difficult. O’Hara was an avid art enthusiast. He says he would go to these galleries as showing that showed only portraits (no landscapes etc.). At these showings he couldn’t see anything but paint on canvas. The paint did not form faces in his eyes. In other words, he sees no faces that compare to his lover’s.

It is not entirely certain who painted it, though the general consensus is that Rembrandt started it and then someone else, perhaps Willem Drost finished it. This painting is a portrait of someone. It is rather awe-inspiring. A man on a horse faces an unknown destiny with what appears to be ruin in the background, and yet, he holds his head high, no fear. Perhaps another reason the author loves the painting so much is that it does not look like the art of any one artist. It is entirely unique. O’Hara wants to be present when his partner sees the painting for the first time, so he is glad that the partner has not been to the museum the painting is housed in.
and the fact that you move so beautifully more or less takes care of Futurism

Even though these artists were amazing, O’Hara says he they all had a fatal flaw. They neglected to choose a proper model. He’s implying that the best model would be his partner. That all those works of art would have been just that much better with his partner as their guide.
it seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience
which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I am telling you about it
The marvelous experience. O’Hara thinks it is a marvelous experience to simply be in the presence of his partner. Something he thinks all those artists missed out on when they neglected to choose his partner as their model. The lack of punctuation implies that this was all said in one breath, that O’Hara could not hold back, that he said all of this in one rushed whisper. It was as if he was afraid if he didn’t hurry, he would not have ever finished. And the fact that there is still no period at the end implies that O’Hara was not finished. He came up to this climactic ending, rushing, and going faster and faster, and then nothing. It simply stops.
